Grotesque Bridges
Grotesque Bridges are the three arched single-span bridges in the southern part of the Tsaritsyno Park. All of them connect the slopes of an ancient ravine. They are located between Nerastankino Pavilion and Ceres Gazebo. The red-brick bridges with white stone decor are made from rough stone called “grotesque,” hence the name.
The bridges were designed by architect Ivan Yegotov in 1805. The large “grotesque” bridge was erected on the site of the dismantled stone bridge remaining from the 1790s. Smoothly bleached white stone details contrast with “grotesque” stone. The small bridge has a more restrained decor: “grotesque” stone is only used in its arch. The third bridge, the smallest, is constructed of red bricks decorated with smooth white stone blocks.
