Island Arch (Mermaid Gate)
Mermaid Island is located in the middle of the Upper Tsaritsyno pond. It is decorated with a small white stone arch. It was designed by the architect Ivan Yegotov in 1804 thanks to the popularity of artificial ruins in gardens and parks. It was initially crowned by a turret with a flying pennant.
In 19th century documents the structure is called “Island Arch” and “Mermaids’ Dwelling.” The name “Mermaid Gate” appeared later. During the construction of the arch, the island was divided in two. As a result one could swim in a boat under the arch and that’s what romantic couples did in the 19th century. Gradually the structure became dilapidated.
As a result of the 2006-2007 restoration, the arch on the island is partially restored – without a canal and without a turret. Trees were replaced by a lawn.
