Ornate (Grape) Gate

Ornate Gate was built in 1777–1778 according to Vasily Bazhenov’s design. This is one of the first Tsaritsyno structures. The gate marks the symbolic boundary between the palace and the park. Bazhenov named it “Ornate” thanks to fanciful forms and decor. The second name – “Grape” – appears in the middle of the twentieth century because of the white-stone decor of the archway, resembling a bunch of grapes.

The Ornate Gate was restored with the highest possible historical accuracy.
