The Big Bridge over the ravine

The Big Bridge is one of the main Tsaritsyno structures. It was built in 1778-1784 as the starting point of the palacial part of the estate according to the architect Vasily Bazhenov’s plan. The ceremonial 80-meter bridge is considered to be the largest of all the remaining 18th century bridges. It’s considered an outstanding masterpiece of Russian bridge construction.

The massive structure seems to be light because it’s wide at the base and narrow at the top. The bridge is richly decorated. The arches resemble the portals of gothic cathedrals. Red brickwork is decorated with white-stone geometric patterns. The sides of the bridge were completed under the guidance of architect Ivan Yegotov, Bazhenov’s student, at the beginning of the 19th century. The pavement and brick parapet with turrets were finished at the same time.

From late 19th century, the bridge became a part of Tsaritsyno highway. It connected Tsaritsyno station with Kashirskaya road. During World War 2, tanks crossed the bridge. In 1975 Tsaritsyno was closed to traffic, but the bridge was in a dilapidated state by then.

During large-scale restoration works of 1985–2007, the Big Bridge was completely restored just as it looked at the beginning of the 19th century.
